This privacy policy explains what personal information nzrugbyhistory.co.nz collects, why we collect it, and what rights you have. We handle personal information in line with New Zealand’s Privacy Act 2020 and its information privacy principles.
nzrugbyhistory.co.nz is an information site about the history of rugby in New Zealand. You can read everything on the site without creating an account, and we do not sell anything or take payments. As a result, we collect very little personal information.
Who is responsible for your information
The site is represented by the website’s owner, who is responsible for the personal information described in this policy. If you have a question about privacy, or want to use any of the rights set out below, please get in touch through our contact page.
What personal information we collect
Information you give us by email
If you contact us, we receive the information you choose to send. That normally means your email address, your name if you include it, and whatever you write in your message. Please do not send us sensitive personal information; we do not need it to answer a question about the site.
Technical information collected automatically
When you visit the site, the services that host and protect it automatically process some technical information. This can include:
- your IP address;
- the type and version of your browser and operating system;
- the pages you request, and the date and time of each request;
- the address of the page that referred you to us, if your browser passes it on.
This information is recorded in server and security logs. We use it to deliver the site, keep it secure and fix technical faults. We do not use it to identify individual visitors or to build profiles of them.
What we do not collect
We do not use Google Analytics or any other visitor analytics tool. We do not show advertising, we do not track your behaviour across websites, and we do not have a newsletter or mailing list.
Cookies
The site uses only necessary cookies. These are small files that basic functions depend on, such as loading pages correctly and keeping the site secure. They come from:
- WordPress, the system the site is built on, which sets cookies for functions such as logging in to the site’s administration area;
- LiteSpeed Cache, which helps pages load quickly;
- Cloudflare, which may set a security cookie to tell real visitors apart from automated traffic.
We do not use cookies for statistics, advertising or tracking. Because we use only necessary cookies, we do not ask you to opt in to them.
You can delete or block cookies in your browser settings at any time, although some functions may stop working if you block necessary cookies. More detail is available on our cookies page.
Why we collect and use your information
We collect personal information only for purposes connected with running the site:
- Answering you – we use your email address and message to reply to your question, correction or feedback.
- Correcting our content – if you report an error, we use the details in your message to check and fix the page concerned.
- Delivering the site – technical information is processed so that pages can be sent to your browser.
- Security and troubleshooting – logs help us detect attacks, block abusive traffic and diagnose faults.
- Meeting legal obligations – we may keep or disclose information where the law requires it.
We do not use your information for marketing, and we do not make automated decisions about you.
How long we keep your information
We keep personal information only for as long as we need it for the purposes above.
- Emails are kept while we deal with your enquiry and for a limited time afterwards, in case of follow-up questions. After that they are deleted.
- Server and security logs are kept for a limited period by our service providers and are then deleted or overwritten in line with their standard practices.
- Cookies last either until you close your browser or for the limited lifetime set for each cookie. You can remove them yourself at any time.
Who we share your information with
We do not sell, rent or trade personal information. We share it only with the service providers that the site depends on, and only so far as they need it to provide their service:
- Hetzner – hosts the site on servers located in Germany, within the European Union. Hetzner processes technical information such as IP addresses in server logs. See Hetzner’s privacy policy.
- Cloudflare – a company based in the United States that provides security and content delivery. Requests to the site pass through Cloudflare’s network, so Cloudflare processes technical information such as IP addresses. See Cloudflare’s privacy policy.
- Google – we use Google Search Console to see how the site performs in Google Search. It shows us aggregated figures, such as which search terms lead people to our pages. It does not give us information that identifies individual visitors. See Google’s privacy policy.
We may also disclose information if we are required to by law, or if it is necessary to protect the site against misuse.
Information held outside New Zealand
The service providers listed above operate outside New Zealand, so technical information about your visit is processed overseas, mainly in Germany and other European Union countries and in the United States. Cloudflare operates a worldwide network, which means a request may also be handled by a data centre in another country, usually one close to you.
We choose established providers that publish clear privacy and security commitments, and we take reasonable steps to make sure the personal information they handle for us is protected in a way that is comparable to the protection required by the Privacy Act 2020.
Security
We take reasonable steps to protect personal information against loss, misuse and unauthorised access. These include encrypted connections (HTTPS) across the whole site, a firewall and protection against automated attacks, restricted access to the site’s administration area, and regular software updates.
No method of transmitting or storing information is completely secure. If a privacy breach occurs that has caused, or is likely to cause, serious harm, we will notify the Office of the Privacy Commissioner and the people affected, as the Privacy Act 2020 requires.
Your rights
Under the Privacy Act 2020 you have the right to:
- ask whether we hold personal information about you and request access to it;
- ask us to correct personal information you believe is wrong. If we do not agree to make the correction, you can ask us to attach a statement of the correction you asked for to the information.
You can also ask us to delete an email you have sent us, and we will do so unless we are required to keep it.
To make a request, use our contact page. We will respond as soon as reasonably practicable, and no later than 20 working days after we receive your request. We may need to confirm your identity before releasing information, so that we do not give it to the wrong person. We do not charge for handling these requests.
Complaints
If you are unhappy with how we have handled your personal information, please contact us first so that we have the chance to put things right.
If you are not satisfied with our response, you can make a complaint to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner, New Zealand’s privacy regulator. The Office’s website explains how to make a complaint and what to expect from the process.
Children
The site is general-interest reading about rugby and is suitable for all ages. We do not knowingly ask children for personal information, and nothing on the site requires a visitor to provide any.
If you are a parent or guardian and believe your child has sent us personal information by email, please contact us and we will delete it.
Changes to this privacy policy
We may update this policy if the way we handle personal information changes, or if the law does. The current version is always published on this page, with the date of the latest update shown below. If we make a significant change, such as introducing a new service that collects information, we will update this page before the change takes effect.
Contact us
Questions about this policy or about your personal information are welcome through our contact page. The conditions for using the site are set out in our terms of use.
